Matters the Tribunal may hear

The Tribunal deals with disputes arising from the employment relationship. Typical matters include:

  • Unfair or wrongful dismissal and termination of employment
  • Redundancy and retrenchment disputes
  • Unpaid wages, terminal benefits and other entitlements
  • Disputes over conditions of service
  • Collective agreement and recognition disputes
  • Discrimination and unfair labour practices in the workplace

Common questions about jurisdiction

Is there a time limit for bringing a complaint?

Time limits apply to most labour complaints. Please consult the Tribunal Rules or contact the Secretariat for the period that applies to your matter.

Can the Tribunal hear criminal matters?

No. The Tribunal deals only with labour and employment disputes. Criminal matters are dealt with by the courts.

What if my matter is outside the Tribunal’s jurisdiction?

The Secretariat will advise you and, where possible, direct you to the appropriate institution.
